Just thought I'd do a quick intro before heading off for the day... tho when I get back it looks like I'll have loads of reading to do! Anyway, my name's Bruce and tripped over this forum while doing a search for all things Scottish on the internet. Some of you already might know of me as I certainly recognise some names in here... if you do know me try and remember my good points and let everyone else discover the bad ones for themselves! So why am I here? Well, the all things Scottish bit above should be a clue there... I love this country that I am so lucky to live in! That's all for now... more later (unless of course someone remembers my REALLY bad points and I get kicked out of here too! )

Thanks Mo... I posted that same piece on another forum and to be honest the people there weren't quite as appreciative no accounting for taste I guess! ;D Where in Scotland are you hoping to visit when you get over?

Hey Bruce, I want to see everything when I go to Scotland but I know that's not possible. We haven't made any definite plans yet but I'm interested in castles, ancient buildings, cathedrals and scenery. The Highlands would be great to see. I would also like to see any of the Highland games. That's why I like chatting with you guys so you can give me some pointers.....

Maureen, as you say, seeing everything is NOT possible... I've lived in Scotland all my life (apart from 7 years spent in England, but I came back most weekends) and I haven't even seen half of the country yet! Anyway, one thing I know we do have is lots of scenery... and a few ancient buildings! The Highlands is a great place, but what you get to see really depends on the time you have! One thing I never understand is those people that are coming over to Scotland and they have such a long list of what they want to see that the only way they can see it all is to never stop travelling... at least you're not falling in to that trap! The good thing about the Highlands tho is that in reality it covers a large proportion of the country... and is not strictly limited to the area known as the Highlands. Basically anything north and west of Stirling could be considered "Highlands" (with Stirling itself known as the Gateway to the Highlands). As for the Highland Games, these take place from May to September with the majority in July and August. This site will give you more details; it lists the games by location and by date as well as giving details of the events that will take place! About the only other thing I can suggest, without knowing more specific details of your plans, is that you try and take in at least one of the islands... check out CalMac (the main ferry operator to the Hebridean and Clyde islands) for details of timetables and prices! No matter what you end up doing, chances are you'll have a great time! Having said that, there is one small thing that might spoil your holiday... well actually there are millions of these small things... Culicoides Impunctatus, the Highland Midge! Check out Undiscovered Scotland's midge page for more details as being forewarned of this pest hopefully means they won't bother you too much!

Hey Bruce, Thanks so much for the informative reply. I can say, that I've bought many books on Scotland and EVERY BOOK TALKS ABOUT THE MIDGE!!! These little devils must be awfully irritating. But, being from the southern part of the US, (mosquitoe central) I think I can tolerate the midge. Thanks for sending the websites on the highland games and the ferry. Taking the ferry to one of the islands has crossed my mind. We're hoping to be staying a week, maybe two. One of my friends that's going wants to stop in on Ireland also, so a week at each place sounds reasonable. So, you lived in England also?? What part? I've been to London once. Did the whole tour thing and it was great. Thanks for being so helpful. See ya around......Mo

Hi Mo! Have you checked the Regional Scotland and Holidays and Outings part yet? You should find some interesting things about Scotland in there. ;-) I've never been to the islands myself but definitely want to go there soon. Need to start with Islay of course, my husband was born there and its been ages since he's been there himself.

So, you lived in England also?? What part? I was in Cumbria (northwest England) so not that far over the border... and I spent most weekends and holidays on the right side of the border so it wasn't too bad!

Hey Bruce, Ciamar a tha thu? How's it going? So, you lived just on the other side of the border? I guess there's not much difference living on the border between England & Scotland, is there??? Hey Andi, I wouldn't mind seeing Germany either. Came close to going once with someone who could speak German (because I can't speak a lick of it and would be afraid to travel somewhere and not know a bit of the local language) but, the trip fell through. To tell you guys the true, I wish I had enough money to quit my job and just travel around the world. I love seeing new places and being able to experience new cultures and talk to people about their heritage. But, I guess that's just wishful thinking........

Hey Mo, I know what it feels like. I've seen alot of Europe, also been in Kenya a few times. But that's it. A workmate of mine went for a 'world trip' for 7 weeks last year! He saved up alot of off days and money for that and happened to see many places in the States, Australia, Africa and Asia. We were all so jealous as you can imagine! Anyways, I have my favourite spots in the world and tend to visit them back all the time instead of trying something new.
