They won 1:0!!!!!!!!!! #claps# #saltire# #minisaltire# Battling Scotland stun FranceScotland's renaissance under Walter Smith was confirmed as the men in dark blue stunned France with a 1-0 win at Hampden Park. Defender Gary Caldwell scored the only goal midway through the second half to inflict on Les Bleus their first qualifying defeat since 5 June 1999 - a 3-2 loss to Russia on the road to UEFA EURO 2000™. Outright leadCaldwell made his Scotland debut in a 5-0 reverse in Paris the last time these sides met in former coach Berti Vogts's first match. Under Smith, however, Scotland have regained their belief and their victory over the FIFA World Cup runners-up gives them the outright lead in UEFA EURO 2000™ qualifying Group B with a maximum nine points. McFadden roleA Scotland success looked unlikely in the first half. Lone striker James McFadden, on his first appearance for either club or country in a month, created an early opening for himself when he dispossessed Lilian Thuram but shot against the legs of team-mate Paul Hartley. Thereafter, though, it was one-way traffic towards the home goal. Henry hits postAfter nine minutes Thierry Henry dusted himself down after a foul by Caldwell and curled a free-kick past Craig Gordon and against the far post. Further set-piece opportunities followed for the visitors as the deep-lying Scotland defence creaked under the strain and, in the 17th minute, from a Franck Ribéry free-kick, captain Patrick Vieira headed in but was denied by an offside flag. Scotland strugglingFour minutes later David Trezeguet beat Gordon with an overhead strike but he too was ruled offside. With Scotland struggling to keep possession, France kept coming and Florent Malouda flashed a half-volley just over and then had Gordon sprawling across his goal to save his low drive. Hampden explodesHaving survived to the break, there was encouragement for the Scots at the start of the second period with an opportunity for McFadden who, in the chase to meet Darren Fletcher's long ball, got ahead of Jean-Alain Boumsong but sliced his shot wide. The hosts were now seeing more of the ball and Hampden exploded in the 67th minute as Caldwell met Hartley's corner and steered a low shot past Grégory Coupet. Henry missFrance had chances to draw level notably when Henry sent a free header straight at Gordon in the closing minutes but Scotland held out for a famous victory. Smith's men will take their unbeaten record to Ukraine on Wednesday, when France must aim to get back on track at home to the Faroe Islands. www.uefa.com/competitions/EURO/FixturesResults/Round=2241/match=83970/index.html

And speaking of the Scotland v France match on the 7th oct at Hampden Park Glasgow. Although I am not a football fan. I would to say the the Clann An Drumma who I also report on in the forum have been signed up to play before the match and possibly at Half Time. So all you football fans might just get the chance to see them play there first venue of the day. You have to remember that Clann An Drumma played at Murrayfield when Scotland beat England 18 . 12 So here is hoping they can lift the Scotland football team the same way the did with the Rugby team. Now was there not a song using 1812 as the title. Seems like they were a great mascot.

Hi to you all
And well done to Scotland on Saturday night. The sad news was that Clann An Drumma turned up to play at Hampden before the match. But then it started raining and they decided that due to this and Joe recovering from a chest infection. It was best not to play as they still had two more venues to play that night. But they were there in Spirit at the start which seemed to help the team.

Caldwell's Scots ripe for EUROwww.teamtalk.com/Images/79726.jpgScotland hero Gary Caldwell admitted Walter Smith's side are starting to dream of a place in the UEFA EURO 2008™ finals after beating FIFA World Cup finalists France 1-0 at Hampden Park. Decisive touchThe 24-year-old Celtic FC centre-back scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute when he slid Paul Hartley's corner past Grégory Coupet, and sealed a historic victory with a disciplined defensive performance to shut out the threat of Thierry Henry and company. Revered guests"What an unbelievable feeling," said Caldwell. "To score that goal and beat probably the best team in the world - it's dreamland for everyone. You would think we had won the European Championship in that dressing room. Sir Alex Ferguson was in there along with Andy Roxburgh congratulating us - it was great." Four fingersThe win, and Caldwell's goal, were sweet revenge for his international debut four years ago when Berti Vogts's team were crushed 5-0 in a friendly at the Stade de France. One of the lasting images from that game was the sight of David Trezeguet holding up four fingers after their fourth goal, but on this occasion Caldwell had the last laugh. Set-piece weakness"I have that picture in the house, but this one will look a bit better," he added. "What we achieved shows how far we've come since then. The gaffer told us they had lost three of their last five goals from set-pieces and we knew if Paul Hartley delivered the kind of ball he always does, the chance would be there." Second strikeIt was Caldwell's second goal for his country, the first coming against Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly two years ago, but the former Hibernian FC defender was equally proud to keep a clean sheet against world-class strikers such as Henry and Trezeguet. Landmark result"A goal's great but for a defender to get a clean sheet against guys like that means just as much," said Caldwell. "France are a fantastic team and put us under a lot of pressure, but it's an unbelievable result and the whole world will sit up and take notice." Top billingScotland's success means they top Group B with nine points going into Wednesday's fixture against Ukraine in Kiev. Christian Dailly will sit that out having collected his second yellow card of the campaign on Saturday, although Kenny Miller is available following a one-match ban. If the expectations of the Tartan Army are soaring, Caldwell is keen to put matters into perspective. Kiev next"We are going to the Ukraine so we have to keep our feet firmly on the ground and realise we haven't achieved anything yet," he said. "But we're top of the group and everybody has to try and catch us. It's a great start but we have to work even harder to achieve our initial aim of qualifying." www.uefa.com/competitions/EURO/news/Kind=1/newsId=465238.htmlGood luck for Kiev lads!

Today in 1985 Jock Stein, Scottish football manager, collapsed and died. He suffered a massive heart attack after watching Scotland draw 1-1 with Wales in a World cup qualifying match in Cardiff. As well as managing the national team, from 1965-78 he was Celtic's most famous manager, seeing them win the European Cup in 1967.
Well done to Scotland winning on saturday in memory of Jock Stein.
