Celtic win Scottish Cup to clinch the double
Sat 26 May, 07:10 PM
GLASGOW (Reuters) - Celtic beat Dunfermline 1-0 with a late winner by Cameroon defender Jean-Joel Perrier Doumbe to win the Scottish FA Cup on Saturday.
The victory secured the 14th league and cup double in the club's 119 year history and meant captain Neil Lennon finished his last game for Celtic with another winner's medal.
Doumbe settled a disappointing final with a scrappy goal after 85 minutes in an untidy match when he scraped an angled 14 metre shot past goalkeeper Dorus de Vries.
"He certainly was an unlikely hero," said Celtic manager Gordon Strachan. "There were a few players below-par today in the first half and he was certainly one of them.
"But the longer the game went on some players got a bit better and I thought he was one of them."
Celtic have now lifted the Cup 34 times after winning three of the past four finals as they provided the perfect send off for skipper Lennon after seven years' service.
He was the last player to leave the pitch after a separate lap of honour with the trophy and told the BBC: "It was a great finish to my Celtic career. We got the right result in the end."
ONLY REGRET
"My only regret is that I never came here when I was 22 or 23. But I've done all this since coming here at 29 so I crammed a lot in six and a half years. It's been very rewarding."
Relegated Dunfermline had the first chance after three minutes when former Celtic forward Mark Burchill burst free on the left only to blaze his shot across goal from close range.
Ten minutes later De Vries dived bravely at the feet of Kenny Miller to thwart the Scottish Premier League champions.
Dunfermline came close again when Scott Morrison let fly with a 25-metre free kick that dipped just over the bar on to the roof of the net in 25 minutes.
Celtic responded with Miller curling in a fine cross from the right on the half hour for Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to power a diving header beyond the far post.
De Vries kept his side in the reckoning with two good second half saves as Celtic surged forward trying to open the scoring.
He blocked Miller's diving header from eight metres following a cross by Aiden McGeady just after the break.
De Vries then managed to stop a rasping shot from defender Lee Naylor who fastened on to a flick from Vennegoor of Hesselink at the edge of the box in the 62nd minute.
But with the match drifting towards extra time, substitute Craig Beattie and Japanese midfielder Shunuske Nakamura prised open the Dunfermline defence before Doumbe fired the winner.
Strachan said new contract talks for the player who joined in January on loan from French side Rennes were "not a worry".
