Dario Franchitti, driver of the #27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone, became the second Scotsman to win the Indianapolis 500, claiming the victory in the rain-shortened 91st edition of the event.
Franchitti ran solidly in the top five throughout the first half of the race before the race was delayed for several hours due to rain. When the action resumed on the track, Franchitti was forced to make a pit stop on the parade lap due to a cut tire. Due to the early stop, Franchitti fell from the fifth spot to the 12th position. Franchitti quickly moved to the front of the field to take the lead on lap 137 and remained the race leader until the checkered flag fell on lap 166.
Franchitti earned his first victory of the season followed by Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves, Sam Hornish Jr. and Ryan Briscoe. Franchitti trails IndyCar Series points leader, Dixon by just three points heading into the sixth race of the season.
What makes thiseven more special is the fact that Dario Franchitti won this great event on the same weekend as the Jim Clark Motor Rallying. Well done Dario franchitti and Scottish Motor Sport.

As well as winning the Indy 500, Dario also won the IRL championship... albeit with a bit of luck as, going in to the last lap of the last race he was 2nd to Scott Dixon, his championship contender, which would have meant they would have finished in that order in the championship itself. However, going in to the final part of the lap Dixon's car almost stopped due to running low on fuel allowing Dario to shoot past in to the lead, win the race and of course the championship... the first Scot to do so!
Dario also came close to winning the 1999 Champ Car World Series... he finished on the same number of points as Juan Pablo Montoya, but Montoya won 7 races to Dario's 3! Dario's next step in his racing career is to move in to NASCAR where he will race alongside Montoya!
