This is also known as Black friday.
A series of commemorative events has been planned to mark the 125th anniversary of the Eyemouth disaster. Almost 200 men lost their lives in the "Black Friday" storm - two thirds of them from Eyemouth.
People will gather this weekend to pay tribute to those who were lost and remember the families left behind.
A play will be performed, a wreath laid at sea by the lifeboat, and the town's children will carry the names of the boats at a special church service.
On 14 October 1881, the Berwickshire fishing fleet put to sea but they were in the eye of a storm.
By noon the fleet was hit by a hurricane and 189 men died.
Almost every family in Eyemouth suffered - losing fathers, husbands, sons, sometimes all three.
But the women refused a charity orphanage's offer to take their children - a decision which will be commemorated in the community play.
It should also be noted that the Life Boats were manned by local fishermen. Yes the same fishermen that were stranded on the rocks some 250 yards from the shore. The same fishermen who`s familys were standing on the harbour and beach watching and listening the to the wooden vessels being snapped due to the storm. Some families lost one generation some lost two or even three generations in this disaster.
We plan to travel down to Eyemouth later today. So we hope to get photos to submit for you all.
Neil

Hi We did go down to Eyemouth this afternoon. But we had missed most of the events. Sorry about that Andrew was not in a lets get up and go mood this morning. On the way down we stopped a few times to take photos of the area. This first one is looking over Pease Bay Holiday Caravan Park. And looking towards the rocky cliffs in the area. Zoomed in on the rocky coast line. Half a mile further down the road and you get this view of Pease Bay Holiday Caravan Park. This is just one area of the camp site. The main road through the campsite. Sorry about the refection of my Mobile phone. This sign outside the camp site gives me a laugh each time I drive past Over looking the fishing town of Eyemouth. Over looking Eyemouth Caravan Park and looking out to the Life Boat in the North Sea. The life Boat Crew were circling the area of where the bodies were recovered 125 years ago. Where the Lifeboat is in this picture. is how close most were to land when then lost their lifes 125 years ago. The Lifeboat crew laying the Wreath in memory of the brave Fishermen who lost their lifes. Entrance to Eyemouth Harbour. This is Gunsgreen House built to an Adams Design in about 1753 Information from the board over looking this house. Zoomed in on the same house. I hope you have enjoyed the photos. To be truthfull I was planning to a report on this area about 6 weeks ago. But then discovered this event was coming up so decided to leave it untill now. Neil

What a tragedy; another piece of local history I loved to learn about. Thank you for the wonderful pics, Neil. They make everything so close to me; almost like walking there myself, in person.
