Without actually researching or reading much into the facts about the Templars, this is what I thought them to be.... A Christian Sect that, under sponsorship, became enforcers of the Christian faith during the Crusades, with a bible in one hand a sword in the other, they were entrusted to carry out missions of faith (bible) and acts of extreme cruelty (sword) and were very successful at both. With such a reputation they gained much wealth and influence but were eventually curtailed and ultimately disbanded as an effective force outwith times of war. I never had any feeling there was romance connected to them, I think they were too puritanical in their methods for such sentiments and thus they are not fondly remembered. Of course they are of historical importance and what's left of their legacy can be studied in ruined castles and churches they built under their name, even though they committed acts of mindbending cruelty within their walls and elsewhere. Any notion of romance has been dreamt up by fiction writers. I'd put them in the same pot as the Spanish Inquisition. If I'm wrong about my understanding of the Templars then I will stand corrected.

I was looking over this thread again. I appreciate so much what each and every one has contributed. And, Neil! How lucky are we to have some one who lives close enough to take photos and give us much visual information as well?! Many thanks to you and everyone!
