When I was attending our Highland games this weekend it was so cold that I was considering buying a tartan shawl to wear at camp. I went to the tartan booth and looked at all the tartans, but I could not decide which one to buy. I *think* my family are Cameron, but I honestly cannot prove it. But I do love the Cameron tartan and since I portray a Jacobite, I wanted to get a Cameron of Lochiel, since they fought valiently for the cause. the only fashion issue for me is that the tartan did not match my outfits! LOL So I refrained. Instead I bought me a linen off white shawl to wear.
I am told that a person can wear any tartan they want, but best to pick the Scottish National. Is this true? Thanks!

Yes you can really wear any tartan that takes your fancy Rosemary, there are so many of them out there now, afriend of mine was telling me the other week on the phone, she was at the opening of the scottish parliament, having stayed here for a few years here she found it a bit cold so she went and bought herself a tartan shawl and wrapped it around her, next thing she sees Sean Connery strutting down the street and he stopped and spoke to her for a while, she has got some photos of the event but haven't saw them as yet #ssmile#

Oh ok, Elly! I soooooooo appreciate this information about the Tartans. I just don't want to try to be something I am not, you know? but I so love reading about the Camerons of Lochiel because of the history with the Jacobite cause. Won't match any of my 18thc dresses, but perhaps I can work on that. A friend of mine is going to make me a new 18thc dress, so perhaps I should work those colors around the Cameron tartan shawl then. I also see the Camerons of Tucson, AZ once or twice a year. They are dressed in 18thc regalia and have invited me to join them. That is another reason I want a Cameron shawl. One of my great-grandmother was a Taylor. I am told this is of Scottish descent and a sept of the Cameron clan. But who really knows if my great-grandmother had ancestry into this, ya know? her first name was Rhoda. Now to me that sounds German! could she have been of Scots/German descent? We're working on that. In the meantime, I am glad to hear that I will not insult anyone by wearing a tartan that I may or may not belong to. Many thanks again, Elly! I'll let you know what I do! I got the business card of the company and they have very good prices. so just a matter of time.
