A stamp featuring Sir Walter Scott has been officially launched at his former home at Abbotsford House near Melrose in the Scottish Borders. The Edinburgh-born writer is pictured in a new set of stamps celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the National Portrait Gallery. The stamps were launched by Ian McKay, director of Scottish affairs with the Royal Mail group. They highlight the gallery's collection of more than 9,000 portraits. The marble bust of 19th Century writer Sir Walter Scott is one of 10 of the portraits selected to feature on the new set of first class stamps. William Shakespeare, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Mary Seacole, Charles Darwin, Emmeline Pankhurst, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Sir Winston Churchill and Dame Cicely Saunders will all appear on the stamps. The 32p stamps go on sale on Tuesday for a month at post offices. The first class stamps can also be bought through the Royal Mail website until the end of the year.
