They have become so popular over the past few years, so many authors to choose from, one of my favourites is Sharon Penman, seemingly she is a historian and all her books I have enjoyed immensely. Probably her Welsh trilogy I liked the best, maybe because of the time frame it was in, but all her books I would recommend.
The Sunne in Splendour (War of the Roses)
Here be Dragons (Welsh Trilogy) Falls the Shadow The Reckoning
When Christ and his Saints Slept Time and Chance (beginning of the Plantagenet Reign in England)

I ordered the Welsh triology, Elly and I'm looking forward to be able to put my fingers on them (or better said stick my nose into them! ) very soon. Another historical novel I like is "Lady of the Glen" by Jennifer Roberson. It's written around the story of the Massacre of Glencoe and very accurate in respect of historical persons, dates and occurences. Besides that she is a terrific writer, too. I highly recoomend it.

Yes, me too Elly. I am going out of town this Thursday and hit the used book store, so hopefully I will find these books, especially the Jennifer Roberson novel.

Try to get the Roberson book, Elly and Rose; I don't think you will be disappointed while reading it. Well, my Penman's books (Here be Dragons; Falls the Shadow and The Reckoning) arrived today. I'm exited to start on them; so if I'm not as much on here as I used to be you know why...I will be sitting in my armchair, my nose sticked between the pages! I read the cover text and will start with "Here Be Dragons" tonight. Sounds very promising. The more as I don't know very much about Welsh history at all. I will let you know what I think about it but it might take a bit of time, the book is 700 pages! but then...I LOVE thick books!

Hi Dreamy looks as though you know a few good websites , where one can check out some good books . Most of my English books I find on amazon, smudger. I quit looking for them in the book stores; very often it's more expensive to order them there than by amazon.

I have finished "Here be Dragons" and am half through "Falls the Shadow"already. I'm hooked.
Here is a rating I found...it says it all:
From Publishers Weekly
"It is a mystery why Simon de Montfort's name is not as instantly recognizable as those of Charlemagne and Richard the Lionhearted. The histories of France and England were significantly shaped by the causes he espoused and the battles he fought. Penman, a writer whose fidelity to historical detail is matched by her gift for narrative, makes Simon, Earl of Leicester, one of her central characters in this sweeping, dramatic saga set in the 13th century. The novel initially suffers from a dual focus, however, since Penman is equally concerned with the descendants of Llewelyn Farr of The Sunne in Splendour, who united the Welsh lords in an uneasy peace. The lives of highborn English, Welsh and French families intersect and painfully collide through complex ties of royal kinship: Montfort's wife, Nell is sister to King Henry III, one of England's most incompetent monarchs. Hot-tempered, high principled and "the most celebrated soldier in Christendom," Montfort enters into bitter conflict with his brother-in-law, becoming leader of the barons who oppose Henry's irresponsible leadership. Henry is forced to accept the Oxford Provisions that limit his power and affirm the rights of English citizens, but after two decades of intrigue, internecine conflict, shifting alliances and full-fledged civil war, Henry's son Edward Plantagenet prevails in the bloody battle of Evesham. Penman brilliantly evokes the medieval world with its deeply ingrained religious convictions that made men believe themselves directly favored or abandoned by God, a mental construct hard to reconcile with "the seductive allure of a chivalric brotherhood based on the sword." As usual, she illuminates the events of individual lives as well as the political and cultural forces that characterized this tumultuous era, in a thoroughly engrossing book...."

When I went to the big city a few weeks ago, I looked for both the Penman and Roberson books and could not find them. I guess I will have to order them online.
