Aye it's sad, here's the article: Italy 2 - 0 ScotlandTony keeps Italy climbingWorld champions Italy moved within two points of the Group B summit as Luca Toni's two goals earned them a deserved 2-0 win over Scotland in Bari. Back on trackAfter taking just one point from their first two UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers, Roberto Donadoni's team have got back on track with three successive victories – this latest one against a Scotland side who started the day top of the section and ended it still level on 12 points with Ukraine and France. Breakthrough Italy had won all five previous home meetings with Scotland, and it took them only 12 minutes to make the breakthrough as Massimo Oddo sent a free-kick into the box and Toni got in front of Lee McCulloch and headed into the left-hand corner of the net. It was not as though Scotland had not been warned, Toni having sent a header sailing wide in the fifth minute. Miller missThough Scotland began poorly, they recovered well after falling behind albeit without creating any clear-cut chances. Lee McCulloch fired a half-volley straight at Buffon and on the stroke of half-time, lone striker Kenny Miller narrowly failed to make a clean connection with a far-post header from Gary Naysmith's cross. Di Natale deniedIf Scotland went into the interval with cause for optimism, they were up against it once the action resumed. In the 49th minute Mauro Camoranesi sent Antonio Di Natale clean through down the inside-left channel but Craig Gordon made a fine one-handed save. Two minutes later Di Natale raced through again and the impressive Gordon denied him once more, this time sticking out his left foot to turn the ball away. Blue waveA blue wave kept rolling towards the Scotland goal, Toni nodding past the far post then driving a shot straight at Gordon. Finally, on 70 minutes, the ACF Fiorentina forward struck again, getting on the end of Camoranesi's right-wing cross with a header down and into the back of the net for his 12th international goal. Toni's double means Italy can look ahead to their June visits to Faroe Islands and Lithuania with renewed optimism, while the Faroes is also the next stop for Scotland, on 6 June. www.uefa.com/competitions/euro/fixturesresults/round=2241/match=83980/report=rp.html

Scotland 2 - 1 GeorgiaBeattie seals Scotland victoryAn 89th-minute winner from substitute Craig Beattie kept alive Scotland's hopes of reaching UEFA EURO 2008™, earning new manager Alex McLeish a narrow but vital victory against Georgia at Hampden Park. Late reliefIt had seemed the home side – who remain top of Group B – would have to settle for a point as Shota Arveladze cancelled out Kris Boyd's early opener in the closing stages of the first period. Scotland were unable to breach a determined visiting defence again, until Beattie controlled a Kenny Miller flick on his chest and steered a left-foot shot beyond Georgi Lomaia to spark jubilant scenes. Perfect startMcLeish had enjoyed a perfect start to his reign as his team took the lead in the eleventh minute through one of the players he had signed at Rangers FC, the unmarked Boyd meeting Gary Teale's pinpoint right-wing cross and placing his header into the corner of the net. Teale and Miller spurned opportunities to extend the advantage, and the hosts were made to pay for their profligacy five minutes before the interval thanks to another player McLeish knows from his time at Ibrox. Clinical ArveladzeGeorgi Demetradze was the architect of the equaliser, twisting and turning down the Georgia left although his cross needed a deflection off David Weir to find its way to former Rangers forward Arveladze, who made no mistake with a close-range diving header. Lomaia produced a solid block from another Miller effort just before the hour yet was then powerless as Boyd's shot bounced over his head, only for the crossbar to come to Georgia's rescue. Italy visitScotland pressed with increasing urgency for a winner in the final phase of the game, and with time running out, Beattie struck to take McLeish's men on to 12 points from five matches. Scotland's next fixture is in Bari against world champions Italy on Wednesday night, when Georgia – who stay on four points - are at home to the section's bottom side, the Faroe Islands. www.uefa.com/competitions/euro/fixturesresults/round=2241/match=83975/report=rp.html

Czech Republic 1 - 2 Germany Kuranyi double lifts Germany clearGermany resisted a late rally by the Czech Republic to clinch a well-deserved victory in this meeting of the Group D pacesetters. Headers decisiveKevin Kuranyi headed in twice before Milan Baroš's goal set up a nervous finish. Unbeaten Germany are three points clear of the Czech Republic, who are now ahead of the Republic of Ireland only on goal difference. Germany on topIt took the visitors just 58 seconds to threaten when Bastian Schweinsteiger's effort from a narrow angle was repelled by Petr Èech. The tempo remained high, with Bernd Schneider nodding a cross from Marcel Jansen past the left post and Schweinsteiger testing Èech again. The goalkeeper then denied the FC Bayern München midfielder for a third time in the first ten minutes with a superb reflex save. Dominance tellsThe home No1 remained busy as Lukas Podolski forced another stop from distance but Germany kept pressing and shortly before the break their dominance told. A Torsten Frings corner from the left found Kuranyi and he rose highest to head acrobatically past Èech. In total control, Germany then hit the crossbar through Podolski who unleashed a powerful shot after Kuranyi set him up. Advantage doubledAfter the interval the Czechs improved, with Jan Koller having an attempt blocked and Baroš going close twice. Germany responded in the 62nd minute with a fantastic counterattack and the rampaging Philipp Lahm's pinpoint cross from the left was nodded in by Kuranyi. With 15 minutes remaining, Jan Polák's long-range strike deflected off Baroš's foot and past Jens Lehmann. Unbeaten run endsThe Czech Republic had hope again, but despite promising efforts from the goalscorer and Tomáš Rosický their unbeaten start to qualifying ended. They will aim to bounce back against Cyprus on Wednesday while Germany resume qualifying against San Marino on 2 June. www.uefa.com/competitions/euro/fixturesresults/round=2241/match=83634/report=rp.html
