Inchmahome Priory was founded 1238 by Walter Comyn, earl of Menteith. And there is written mention that there may have been a church there, before the creation of the Priory. There is written evidence that Robert the Bruce visited the Priory in 1305, 1308 and again in 1310. The Priory occupies Inchmahome Island, in the Lake of Menteith. This is an effigy of Walter, first earl of the Stewart line who died about 1295, along with his countess, Mary. Their feet are resting on what appears to be two dogs, but the information board suggested it was a lion and a dog. The effigy of a 14th century knight, with the Stewart crest carved into his shield. Looking from the nave, toward the chancel area and the east wall, which contains this enormous window with five lancets. The small seating arches were where the celebrant and his assistants would have been seated during services. Looking from the chancel, back toward the nave. Some of the grave markers are visible in this image. A view of the chapter house, where the effigies were stored, to protect them from the ravages of the weather. A view of the Lake of Menteith

More wonderful photos, what a beautiful place steeped in history, a marvellous time you have had Mike. Those effigies are amazingly well preserved.

Thanks Mike for taking the time to do the short crossing by small boat to the island. And for taking the time to explain. We have never been over to the island ( Shame Shame ) but would like to try and make the trip one day. As I say thanks again for the time taken to explain.
