A CONTEST for one of the oldest sporting trophies in the world is to be held in Musselburgh this week.
The shoot for the Silver Arrow, a centuries-old archery trophy, will be held on Musselburgh links this Thursday and will see 20 members of the Royal Company of Archers compete for the prize.
The competition is only open to members of the royal company - who are the Queen's bodyguard in Scotland - and it is believed to date back to 1603.
Members will parade through the town with a pipe band both prior to and directly after the event, which starts at 4.30pm.
We are planning to attend this event.

Sounds good Neil, look forward to hearing about it, funny was watching a new series here on tv the other night Robin Hood and they had a silver arrow comp, no prizes for guessing who won that one though

We are just back from the Silver Arrow contest in Musselburgh East Lothian. This event started at 4.30pm and was still on going when we left around 5.40pm. It was due to finish around 6.30pm. Each Archer fires two Arrows at a target. The nearest to the target scores 1 point if they hit the target they get 2 points. But this does not mean that they have won. The reason being you could have hit the target giving you 2 points while some could have had 3 closest to the targets giving them a total of three points. We did not know how long the contest run and had to be back for Andrews meal time or else we could have stayed longer. The Royal Archers are competing for the Selkirk Silver arrow next Sat 26th May and are also competing at Hoptoun house South Queensferry in either June or July. This is the Lothian Borders Police Pipe Band escorting the Royal Archers into the Musselburgh Race Course. The Royal Archers arriving at the race Course. Royal Archers The Royal Archers receive there final instructions. This might give you an idea of how far they have to shoot. The white square in the middle is the target. Me being brave standing behind an Archer looking at the target . Arrows around the target.
